INTERVISTA
MAX BLARDONE
Many happy returns on your thirtieth birthday. An important milestone reached last 26th of November during the full athletic season. What do you expect from this season of world cups and the next Winter Olympics in Vancouver?I would really like for this to be defined as my over the top season, it’s too soon now to say it, but I have every reason to believe it will happen. I have to be sincere, in ten years of athletic activity I’ve had plenty of important acknowledgements; the results are there and I’m pleased about that. Sure, last year I didn’t win the World Cup, just like four years ago I wasn’t able to win an important Olympic medal. This is the season where I’d like to achieve two important goals.
Born in Domodossola, resident of Pallanzeno in the Ossolane Valleys: who gave you your passion for downhill skiing and to whom do you give thanks for becoming a world class champion? The biggest thanks go to my family. First of all for their sacrifices, also economic ones, which they had to bear in order for me to achieve important results, and then because they taught me strong and healthy principles. They taught me to respect myself and others, a principle that has allowed me to always have greatest respect for the people I have worked with. From this my spirit of sacrifice arises, fundamental for becoming a professional athlete. A huge thanks also to all my trainers, coaches and the people who always believed in me and helped me develop in this discipline.Do you remember the first moment when you put skis on your feet? How did you develop your career and when did you realize that you would make it?I have always been determined to get good results, but calmly and serenely. I have never challenged this sport, I have always lived it daily, with lots of passion, enjoying victories and learning about defeat. The awareness that wanting to dedicate myself to this sport came with time, season after season. The first time I put on a pair of skis I was three years old, for the first competition I had to wait until I was seven, when I finally had the adequate abilities to enter into the category I was competing in. I started winning right away, and up to the regional championships it was fairly simple. When you then leave that small arena and start to face the external ones, you really realize if you make a difference on the slopes. From sport to fashion. What are your tastes in clothing: what do you like to wear when you are not competing, and what must never be missing from your closet?Normally I love simple, casual clothes. So it’s easy to imagine that my closet is never without jeans of some kind.
In the category of accessories on the other hand, is there a luxury you can’t give up?Notwithstanding I am a man, I love diamonds a lot. I have a diamond bracelet that I decided to give myself if I got in the top three of the World Cup. From that moment that happened two years in a row, I felt I truly deserved it. Another accessory I won’t live without is a watch. When I’m not in ski clothes, in training or in a race, I always wear one. What does Luxury represent to a successful athlete like Max Blardone? If I have to think about luxury, I think of extremely beautiful things, even if they are a bit exaggerated. I think of super accessorized yachts, I think of cities like Monte Carlo or Las Vegas. I too love beautiful things, but I also know how to be happy with a simpler life. I prefer my simplicity with respect to the phoniness that many people build up, who squander their own fortune only to demonstrate that they have one. Many of these people are ruined in the space of a few years and no one talks about their wellbeing. I believe that today there is a real need to be more responsible also with your money.Other than skiing, what sports are you crazy about and why?I love all sports that have to do with the world of motors: Rally, Formula 1, World Motorbike... The Rally is really a passion that I can not only follow as spectator but I can also practice in my free time. With a few friends, from April to June, I have fun taking part in a few races for amateurs in our area…You are surely at the peak of your physical form and athletic maturity, but a powerful curiosity makes us ask a great sports champion what he would like to once he has finished racing. What will you do?If I have to be sincere, I’d like to change. Notwithstanding I love skiing, I think that doing something different will let me discover other talents. Without a doubt, becoming a trainer for young talent would be a profession that I would practice with passion and dedication. Unfortunately I would be a trainer of the old school and would expect perhaps too much even from the youngest, but I believe it’s important to reacquire the sense of sacrifice and that you face this discipline in a more professional way, working hard to reach important objectives.
